Tips to Choose the Best High Flow Mufflers

Was the concept of a muffler unknown to you until you bought a car? If the answer is yes, you certainly have many more people like you who are not aware of the existence of a thing called a muffler. A muffler, in the simplest term, is an auto part that helps in noise reduction. When internal combustion takes place within your engine, exhaust gases are expelled at high-pressure pulses. These pulses create powerful sound waves and it is the muffler that helps reduce the noise to a bearable frequency.   There are a host of high flow mufflers to choose from, depending on the kind of vehicle you want to use it for and obviously your preference. To make things easier for you, here we will list a few things that you need to keep in mind before purchasing a high flow muffler:

  • Type of exhaust system: Before purchasing a high flow muffler, make sure you exactly know if your exhaust system is single or dual. While a single exhaust will require a single inlet on the muffler, a dual exhaust will require a dual inlet.
  • The diameter of the exhaust pipe: Make sure to measure the diameter of the exhaust pipe before purchasing a high flow muffler. You will require matching your inlets, and in some cases outlets, to match your existing exhaust diameter.
  • Decide on the style of muffler: There are basically three muffler styles, chambered, turbo and straight. If you have a muscle car or a street machine, you must opt for the chambered mufflers. They are designed to reduce exhaust while providing a throaty performance sound for the street. Turbo mufflers typically use a set of perforated tubes, which often guide the exhaust gasses through the muffler in an S-shaped pattern.  Straight-through mufflers, or glass packs, are designed to allow maximum flow and horsepower. These mufflers feature a straight, perforated pipe wrapped in sound absorbing material such as fiberglass packing.
  • The metal you want to use for the muffler: The muffler body is usually made of aluminum or stainless steel. If you are looking for a high-quality muffler you must opt for the stainless steel variety. Though the aluminized steel is less expensive, you must invest in a superior quality stainless steel variety.
  • Measure the space available for the muffler: Before deciding on a high flow muffler you have to first make sure the outside dimensions of your muffler allow the proper clearance under the vehicle. If the length is appropriate, it will ensure easy installation and proper clamping. The right casing size and shape will allow it to fit within the confines of your vehicle’s undercarriage. Thus under vehicle clearance must be taken into account before finalizing your choice.
There are a lot of choices today and choosing a high flow muffler can be a tough job. Moreover, it varies from one vehicle to another. Also, it hugely depends on whether the owner of the car is happy with the loud creaking sound or wants to lower it down significantly. There are a lot of choices out there and steps to take before you make your final selection. Ultimately, the right muffler for you is dependent on the sound you’re looking to lose or gain. As long as your measurements and fitment are correct, the biggest decision to make is the decibel level. If you do your research well, you will be able to make the correct choice. If you are an amateur in the field, you should consult people who have proper knowledge on high flow mufflers.
